The Road Freight Association (RFA) Convention 2026 brought together industry leaders, policymakers, economists and logistics professionals to discuss the future of transport and logistics in South Africa.
Representing Ziegler South Africa, Regional Manager Marlene van der Merwe and Operations Manager – Beitbridge, Valentine Tandi attended the convention to gain insight into the trends, challenges and opportunities shaping our industry.
While a wide range of topics were discussed, one message stood out: despite ongoing challenges, there is genuine reason for optimism. Here are five key takeaways from this year’s convention.
1. Rail Is Back on the Agenda
A key theme throughout the convention was the renewed focus on rail freight.
Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa outlined government’s ambition to move 24 million tons of freight by rail by 2027 as part of broader efforts to strengthen South Africa’s transport network.
While road freight remains dominant, increased investment in rail infrastructure and operations points to a more balanced and resilient freight system that could reduce congestion and improve supply chain efficiency.
2. Road Freight Remains the Backbone of the Economy
Road transport continues to move approximately 80% to 84% of South Africa’s freight, with around 1,800 trucks crossing the Lebombo Border Post daily.
With freight volumes remaining heavily road-dependent, ongoing investment in road infrastructure remains critical to improving transit times, reducing costs and maintaining reliable supply chains.
3. Global Events Have Local Consequences
Presentations highlighted how global geopolitics increasingly impacts local logistics operations.
Using the Strait of Hormuz as an example, speakers demonstrated how disruptions in key international trade and energy corridors can affect fuel prices, transport costs and supply chains worldwide.
The message was clear: logistics businesses must remain agile and informed in an increasingly interconnected world.
4. Sustainability Is Becoming a Business Imperative
Sustainability featured prominently throughout the convention, with a strong focus on efficiency, technology adoption and long-term resilience.
As customer expectations evolve and ESG considerations become increasingly important, sustainability is no longer simply a future goal—it is becoming a key driver of competitiveness and operational performance.
5. Adaptability Will Define Future Success
Political commentator and author Justice Malala explored the forces shaping the next decade, including geopolitical tensions, climate change, demographic shifts and artificial intelligence.
His message resonated across the convention: organisations that remain adaptable, informed and responsive to change will be best positioned to succeed.
